Marion Motley, was a man of great character as well as a talented receiver was put in jail in 1940 and about to be tried for manslaughter following a car accident. Friends and acquaintances of the Nevada University, where he played football and studied, raised $1,000 to pay the fine that would prevent him from doing hard time. It was a California exception to the rule, where perpetrators were let off the hook in situations like his, for lesser crimes of this nature. Motley went on to play halfback and linebacker for the Cleveland Browns of the upstart All-American League.
